Guide to playing in Esplanade effectively

Overview: Esplanade is a relatively versatile map. It is a medium to large map, and is very dynamic, meaning that it can be played with pretty much any hull and turret combo and playing style. Its most common game mode is CTF, but is not played very often.

Tactics

DM

“Camping” Tactic

In Deathmatch, as always, camping is the best strategy. The best camping spots are all enhanced by having a few mines, either to cover your back, or to block the only way for enemies to get to you.
One good place for camping is in either of the tunnels near the opening at the flags with a view of the corridor. When in the tunnel, it is best to have a medium to heavy hull such as Hunter, Viking, Dictator, Titan or Mammoth along with a medium to long range turret, such as Twins, Ricochet, Hammer, Smoky, Thunder, Railgun and Shaft. As most of these camping spots will require an additional line of defense, mines will be extremely useful for blocking up the end that is nearest to the flag. Doing this will mean that other tankers will come around the corner and BOOM! You will need at least three mines to ensure a full blockade. If you do not have mines this camping area is not so effective, as you can be caught looking the wrong way.

Another good place to camp is on the top level of the map, around where the tunnel comes out. This is an especially good place to camp as there is only one way to get into it, and the top path is well used by tankers. A medium to heavy hull is the most effective option for camping in the top region. Vulcan, Railgun, Magnum and Shaft are the best turrets to use as they have a massive effective range. This spot is probably the best area to camp in as it doesn’t require mines (though they can be very helpful) for camping, and you can’t really be taken by surprise.

The third spot for camping is next to the shipping containers near to the area where the tunnel exits are and where the CP points would be. This area is strong as it has many places that it can attack from, but this unfortunately means that there are many ways that you can be attacked. Again, to counter this, you can use mines to block routes in, but people will still be able to reach you by jumping from the top, or shooting at you from the flatter parts around the edge, so this area can be risky. If camping here, it is recommended to use a well armored hull such as Hunter, Viking, Dictator, Titan or Mammoth paired with a medium to long range turret, such as Smoky, Thunder, Vulcan, Magnum, Railgun or Shaft.

“Hit and Run” Tactic

Another strategy is the Hit and Run strategy. As stated by the name, this involves moving around almost all the time attacking everyone. You will almost certainly need a few drugs to pull this off effectively, especially double damage, but it can just about guarantee a top placing in the table.

The key to pulling this tactic off effectively is to get out of the enemy’s line of fire. Try to damage them while driving around them, staying behind the turret if possible. The ideal equipment is probably a quick, sturdy hull such as Wasp, Hornet, Viking or Hunter partnered with a turret that has high damage and a reasonably quick reload speed, such as Firebird, Freeze, Isida, Hammer or Smoky.

TDM

In Esplanade TDM, you want to have the same tactics as in DM, just with more campers, fewer mines and a few Isidas. Having an Isida or two handy is very helpful so that your team is able to replenish its troops on the battlefield. In this mode of play, it is recommended using medium hulls and long or medium range turrets, with only a few faster tanks with Freeze to distract and slow the enemy tanks for the more dangerous, high damage tanks to take them out. Don’t forget the Isidas!

CTF

Defense

Again, camping would be the best strategy for defense in Esplanade. Nothing more secure than a fat Mammy-Twins sitting on the flag with an Isida as his right-hand man, a pile of drugs ready to be used and a whole maze of mines surrounding him. To put it simply, do this and the enemies will seriously struggle to even damage you, let alone take the flag.

Another method you can try for defense is to have a Hornet or Viking paired with Freeze, hanging out around the flag so any tankers trying to get past will find it even harder to get away.

Attack

In attack, there are really only four main ways to get to a flag and return. You can either go through the two tunnels, up the top, around the map, or a mixture of the three.

For hulls, a light hull is recommended, such as Hornet or Wasp, just so that you can nip in and out of the enemy base quickly without taking much damage. While attacking, it is best trying to go in groups of two or more. This means that if they target one of the 2, the second can try taking advantage of the reload time and stealing a sneaky flag. You will need to try and take the route that has the most teammates on it as if you lose it, they will be near to pick it up.

CP

Basically for this game mode on this map, you want to get the three control points up the top. Once you have gotten these three points, all you need to do is hold them, and you will win. To capture these three points, you will need to storm the top and block off the spiral tunnel. While storming, have a well-balanced team. This means you will need a mix of short, medium and long range turrets with light, medium and heavy hulls. Once you have captured the top, the best way to block them off is have 2 Titans side by side with an Isida behind.
