What is a Chat moderator?

«

A Chat Moderator is a Tanki player who enjoys the game and wants Tanki Online to be the best it can be. Someone who is willing to take action to help Tanki be the best it can be. Someone who wants Tanki to be a fun and social place between players. Someone who wants to help prevent verbal fighting, swearing, discrimination, offensive insults, sexually explicit language, and the stealing of other players’ accounts.

A Moderator is someone who dedicates their time to making Tanki Online a fun and safe environment for all ages to enjoy. They are normal players selected by the Administration team to ensure the chat in the game and the lobbies remains appropriate for all users and help people follow the Rules of the game.

Chat Moderator is a job that requires a lot of responsibility and will to handle. This kind of job doesn't fit everybody, some qualities such as maturity, common sense, knowledge about the game, and knowing how to deal with different situations are a must. Overall, a Chat Moderator is a player who wishes to work a lot for a better Community and is willing to sacrifice a lot of his free time in order to do so.

What do Chat moderators do?

«

Chat Moderators willingly give their own time to help Tanki to be a fun place to chat and to test and improve one's skills in online tank warfare and parkour. Chat Moderators help others to learn to interact respectfully with other players and to maintain a friendly standard of online gaming etiquette. This includes chatting with players, warning players, and banning a player's ability to chat if needed. Chat Moderators watch the chat rooms of the servers as well as chat within battles.

Chat Moderators spend their time communicating with the other players of the game by promoting a safe and mature attitude and ensuring the lobbies remain free from content that could potentially insult, mislead or danger other players. Chat Moderators prefer to communicate and to educate players about Tanki, but if Rules are constantly broken, they have the ability to warn/ban users from the chat.

People are sometimes mistaken thinking that Chat Moderators are some kind of police, which is wrong, except for the banning part; a more important part of this job is communicating with players and being there for everybody who needs help.

Why are some bans longer than others?

«

It depends upon the severity of a player's failure to maintain friendly gaming etiquette. Minor mistakes merely need a warning or a five-minute ban from chat. Larger mistakes receive a 60-minute chat ban. Severe violations of etiquette receive chat bans of one day, one week, or one month. Unending repetition of severe violations eventually results in bans from chat for six months or even forever.

Moderators have certain guidelines to go by when issuing a ban and different violations mean different ban lengths. When making a ban, Moderators will check the context of the violation. In regards to swearing and profanity, they will check if it's directed at another player/group or if it's indirect. They will then issue the correct ban according to the guidelines.
With regards to trading, Moderators will check a user’s karma (ban history) for previous trading violations and then act accordingly. In general, Moderators prefer to communicate with players about violations before banning and don't want to be seen as the police, but in some cases, bans are needed to maintain proper order in the chat and keep it safe for everyone.

We cannot treat everything equally as situations are sometimes completely different one from another. Some violations are really offensive and graphic, while others are simply understandable and do not require using bans but a simple explanation in chat. This is a much fairer way to deal with players than to just have one way of treating everybody, never mind the differences.

What would be your advice for those looking to become a Chat moderator?

«

My advice to anyone desiring to be a Chat Moderator is to learn the standards of proper online etiquette and to follow those standards of etiquette. Chat Moderators need to be a constant and continuous example to others on how to maintain proper etiquette. The ability to demonstrate this becomes even more important when dealing with players who choose not to be respectful to others. For Chat Moderators it is a necessity to lead others by example.

My advice for players wanting to become a Moderator is to be helpful in the chat towards other players, respect everyone in the game, and have an unbiased and friendly attitude. Being active also plays a huge part in the selection process and keeping clean karma. Moderators are always on the front line so therefore have to lead by example.

My advice would be to always keep it cool, whatever happens, and remember that it is just a game. As in everything else, there are always reasons to get angry, but when people lose their cool, they simply do things they regret later on. Always respect other players, don't lose your cool and be mature in every situation you may have.
